Spring Break!!

Have a nice spring break!! Enjoy yourselves and relax!!

Science Camp

This past week, our 5th graders participated in a science camp. We picked the areas our students were the lowest in and used that to determine what lessons were taught. They loved it!! We looked at physical and chemical changes, rocks and minerals, made balloon rockets, looked at real flowers to identity parts, and discussed renewable and nonrenewable resources. They were so excited!! Can't wait for them to knock the science FCAT out of the park!!

Happy Pi Day!!

Sorry it's a little late...we have been super busy with learning!! We celebrated Pi day March 14. Last year we did a lesson where we found the area of a circle, so this year I looked for a different lesson. We measured the distance around the circle, circumference, and then divided it by the diameter of the circle. Most of their answers were super close to 3.14 or Pi. Some of them were off, but then we re-measured and it was closer. This lesson also helped us practice out measuring skills! When we finished, we ate pie!!

Going in Order

Here's a chart we made yesterday.

Order of Operations

Yesterday we made these foldable charts for our journals. Loved them!! They really used them a lot during class :)

We filled in more to the right today with more examples! They love solving expressions!!!

Order of Operations

Today we started on a new benchmark where we are required to use the order of operations to solve an expression. First, I had the students solve an expression with no help.....some were able to solve it and some weren't. But that was okay since they have never learned it! After that, I had some friends come up and share their work. One friend was able to solve it and explained the order of operations: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, Addition and Subtraction. We are using the acronym: Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally or we can call it PEMDAS.

Our chart we made :)
